Printmaking
2nd grade students are starting a printmaking unit! Printmaking is a really fun art making process full of learning opportunities. To start students needed to make a printing plate. Using a piece of foam and a pen, 2nd graders etched or scratched in their design using patterns, lines, and shapes. Next, they were able to experiment with making a marker print, which is a simple and easy way to make a print. They colored their printing plate with a washable marker, wet a piece of paper, laid the wet paper on top of the printing plate, massaged the paper, and then pulled their print! This was a fun experiment to try.
Next week students will be printing with ink and using some traditional printmaking tools.

Pattern Pumpkins
2nd graders learned about artist Romero Britto, as well as color and pattern for this project. Students began by drawing pumpkins and using rulers to divide up their background space. Next, they painted their pumpkins using warm colors and their backgrounds using cool colors. Last, they added pattern inspired by Romero Britto's artwork.
Paul Klee Inspired Cities
2nd graders spent the last few weeks learning about artist Paul Klee, and different types of shapes. They combined organic shapes (tissue-paper-colored backgrounds) and geometric shapes (straight-edge printed buildings) to create these colorful cityscapes.
Optical Illusion Paper Weaving
Celebrating Dot Day 2018 with some inspiration from Kandinsky and Peter H. Reynolds (author of The Dot)!
2nd Graders painting concentric circles using only primary colors. Color mixing and experimenting fun!
After a day spent weaving black paper strips into their colorful concentric circles, we have the final product!
